Per Kurt’s event post on Facebook (for more info on Kurt and his music, visit: www.ribak.com):
“Vallejo Jazz Society presents Kurt Ribak Quartet with Vallejo homegirl guest vocalist Sheilani Alix.
Bassist / bandleader / singer / songwriter Kurt Ribak leads an acoustic jazz quartet featuring Kurt’s original jazz compositions. Although best known as a bassist, Kurt will also sing a few numbers. Vallejo native Sheilani Alix will be a guest vocalist.
The rest of the band is the renowned drummer David Rokeach, formerly with Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin among others, and long-time collaborators Greg Sankovich on piano and Lincoln Adler on saxophone.
Kurt says what he’s trying for in his music is “Charles Mingus meets The Meters. They go to Duke Ellington’s house to jam, and Cachao and Thelonious Monk sit in.”
Kurt and his band have performed at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the SFJAZZ Center, Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, Yoshi’s (both Oakland and the now-closed San Francisco site), San Jose Jazz Festival, Nor-Cal Jazz Festival, Fillmore Street Jazz Festival, and the Blue Note Napa.
Kurt’s newest CD, “ONWARD” is available at CDBaby. It is played on KCSM-FM, KPFA and other jazz stations and was featured on PRI’s “Jazz After Hours.”
Kurt’s previous recording, “I Got One More!” also enjoys airplay on KCSM and other jazz stations and was featured on PRI’s “Jazz After Hours.” It was on DJ lists of best jazz recordings of the year, including Bradley Stone of The Creative Source and Michael Burman of KCSM-FM.
We will be playing two sets starting at 5:00 PM. Each will last about one hour, with an intermission of approximately 20 minutes.
Tickets will be $20 at the door and online at VallejoJazzSociety.com, $10 each for Vallejo Jazz Society Members, and up two students can attend free with one paid adult admission”
